Go Bulldogs!

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

The ladies of Kaine Homes volunteered some time this past Friday for the Barstow Elementary School Field Day.

Tiffani, Stacey and Erin wrangled the children at the Tug-O-War station, Shannon and Christine managed the wands and wizards at the Harry Potter station and Melissa and Bobbi were dancing queens at the High School Musical station.

Thank you Barstow Bulldogs for having us!

‘Where’s Brooke?’ this week was a bit trickier….were you able to guess where he was?
Where's Brooke Shoppe for Hospice pixilated

If you guessed Calvert Shoppe for Hospice, you are correct!
Where's Brooke Shoppe for Hospice

Shoppe for Hospice is located in the Kaine Industrial Park on Old Town Road in Huntingtown. The women’s clothing store offers gently used clothing, in all sizes, at very reasonable prices. The “Boutique Section,” where our very own Brooke posed for his photo, offers designer clothing as well. You can also find accessories, such as jewelry, handbags and scarves. Visit the shoppe Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The best things are not the prices; the facility is 100% run by volunteers and all proceeds benefit Calvert Hospice.

If you’re interested in cleaning out your closet and donating to a very worthy cause, please visit the shoppe with your gently used items Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Gardening 101

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Last week during our company lunch, Mimi from Calvert County Master Gardeners gave us a class on gardening basics.
GC2

Mimi explained to us the basic requirements to research and prepare when planning your garden:
1. Soil-Type (clay, sandy or loam,) Fertility (test the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and PH (minerals more available in soil closest to neutral 6.0-7.0)
2. Light-Too much light equals wilted plants with long, leggy shoots. Too little light equals short plants with few leaves.
3. Water-Too much water equals plant/root rot. Too little water equals shriveled leaves and spaghetti-like roots
4. Climate-Only plant what can survive in the area you live (we are a zone 7A)
5. Essential tools-Trowel, shovel, garden hoe, rake and hand pruners are all examples

We also found out some great plants for beginner gardeners!
Herbs-Chives, Mint, Rosemary, Basil, Cilantro
Vegetables-Cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, green beans and tomatoes
Flowers-Black Eyed Susan, Shasta Daisy, Sedum

And a shout out to our Design Manager, Shannon, who has quite an extensive garden herself! Who knew the time and care that went into planning and maintaining…but what a wonderful result!
